Anxiety disorders are the most common group of mental disorders. Anxiety is often your body’s reaction to stress. Feelings of nervousness or anxiousness are normal, and everyone will experience them in their lifetime. However, anxiety disorders often create an excessive amount of worry and fear that can result in physical symptoms and can interfere with one’s daily activities. Yet, there are medications, psychotherapies, and nonpharmacological treatments available for anxiety disorders that are extremely effective and can help you lead a healthy, normal, and productive life.

Common signs and symptoms of anxiety include:

Feeling nervous, restless or tense

Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom

Having an increased heart rate

Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)

Sweating

Trembling

Feeling weak or tired

Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry

Having trouble sleeping

Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems

Having difficulty controlling worry

Having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety
